International Outreach: Refugee Mentoring & Homework Help supports new Americans and their families in the local community through mentoring matches and an after-school homework club.
Little Brother/Little Sister program matches St. Michael’s students with children between the ages of 6-12 from the Winooski JFK Elementary School. College “Bigs” provide caring support and friendship to their “Littles”. Mentor pairs meet on a weekly basis, and student coordinators also organize monthly group activities and end of semester programs. LB/LS works with school guidance counselors and all referrals come directly from the school. LB/LS’s expectation is that the college buddies will maintain their relationships for four years.
Middle School Mentors works with a group of 12 middle school girls from the Winooski Middle School. Each student is matched with a female college buddy and the entire group meets once a week during the academic year. College buddies assist their mentees through tutoring and by acting as caring, consistent role models.
