The Foster Grandparent Program (FGP) provides meaningful volunteer roles for adults 55 years of age or older who are interested in working with children. FGP’s goal is to make a difference in the life of a child while at the same time enriching the life of the volunteer. Volunteers (who receive a stipend) serve from 15-40 hours per week providing supportive one-to-one assistance to special needs children from birth to 21 years of age in child care centers, schools and other agencies. Currently, FGP serves senior volunteers and children in Chittenden, Franklin, Grand Isle and Washington Counties.

First Year of operation: 1977
Minimum age for mentor: 55
Minimum time commitment: 15-40 hours/week (includes a stipend)
Minimum length of commitment: 1 school year


RSVP School Buddies
is a program that matches volunteers age 55 and older with elementary school children whom teachers have identified as not meeting the current academic standards. Volunteers are asked to serve 1-2 hours per day, 1-2 times per week for a minimum of one school year. RSVP School Buddies serve on-site at a school and are supervised by a classroom teacher. RSVP volunteers may assist children with reading, math, spelling, or other academic areas.

Minimum length of commitment: 1 school year

Friends for Youth Mentoring Conference

April 18 - 19 at Oracle Santa Clara Conference Center

Friends for Youth is hosting its 14th Annual Mentoring Conference in Santa Clara, CA. This year's conference features David DuBois, Ph.D., and Michael Karcher, Ed.D., Ph.D., as Research Keynote Speakers, who will discuss the new second edition of the Handbook on Youth Mentoring.
