Local Mentors Honored at the Annual Mobius  “Thank Your Mentor Day” Breakfast

January 2011

On Tuesday, January 25th, Mobius celebrated National Mentoring Month with its annual, Thank Your Mentor Day Breakfast at the Hilton Hotel in Burlington. The breakfast was a special event celebrating the efforts of the 808 mentors in Chittenden County and featured speeches by spokesperson Lori McBride, UVM women’s basketball coach, and King Street mentor Mike Fife and his mentee Brandon. Mobius also presented awards to 12 local mentors, including South Burlington resident Bethany Scott, a mentor through the Howard Center Community Friends mentoring program.

Kristen Hayden-West, Community Friends Program Coordinator, recognized Scott as both a dedicated friend to her mentee of eight and a half years, and an advocate for the program.

“Bethany’s relationship with her mentee is notable for its longevity, consistency, and the strength of the friendship,” said Hayden-West. “They have a long history of setting goals as a team and working together to achieve them. This past year, with Bethany taking graduate classes and her mentee in high school, they decided that in addition to their traditional fun-based weekend outing, they would set aside a separate evening each week to work on schoolwork together. Outside of the time, energy and heart that Bethany brings to her mentoring relationship, she has been a steady supporter of the program by participating in PR events, fundraising, and bringing in multiple financial gifts through her employer’s volunteer hour matching program.”
